Hello, my name is Mathilde

And welcome to my blog!
I am a marine biologist, with a passion for marine animals, specifically whales, dolphins and porpoises. I work as a whale watch guide in Iceland and have worked on (expedition) cruise ships to share my passion with guests and show them the beauty of the marine environment! On this blog I would like to share this passion with everyone.

Watch an orca coming up for a breath!
All whales are marine mammals and they have to come up to the surface to breathe for air. It doesn't matter what the weather is, or what time of day, they have to come up to the surface. Normally they come up every 3 to 5 minutes of they are travelling. They are able though to "hold their breath" for up to 15 minutes.
Love seeing orca on an almost a day to day basis!😍 they are not always here or the weather prevents us from going out to sea.

Its not just orca we see here in Breiðafjörður, lately we have seen plenty of humpback whales as well!
The little bumps on the humpbacks head are called tubercles. And each tubercle contains a hair follicle with a single hair!
It's still not clear why why they have hair. It could still be there through evolution from their ancestors, maybe they use the follicles to sense their surroundings, much like whiskers.

On Monday I had a day off due to the weather. Naturally I decided to explore a bit more around my new hometown and walked to Kirkjufellsfoss. During the walk the strong winds pushed in grey clouds with snow. It ended up being a proper winter walk. The Icelandic landscape is definitely stunning!

The world is changing, however whales and dolphins will never stop to amaze me! We need to keep on showing and sharing the natural beauty of our planet and we need to keep protecting this natural world in peace!
After only a week and a half working as a whale watch guide my phone is nearly full with videos from some incredible encounters with these incredible animals! I probably had some of my best ever encounters in this last week! Looking forward to what the rest of the season will bring!🐋🐬
So naturally I had to share some of my favourite videos! Not a single day is the same, and we never know which species we will encounter.
