About me

The idea behind Trails of the sea is a blog about the sea. Where I will follow different trails of information and write, hopefully, interesting and educational posts. However, its not just informative posts, I will also be writing about my own adventures. You could see this as both an informative marine blog and a travel blog.

But who am I? My name is Mathilde, I am from the Netherlands and have a passion for the marine environment. I studied Coastal and Marine management at Van Hall-Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.  During my studies I learned a great deal about the marine ecosystem, marine policy and marine conservation. However one is never really done with learning. With this blog I want learn new things about the marine environment but also want to take you, the reader, with me on this exploration of our seas and oceans. Besides my passion for the marine environment I am also a hobby nature/wildlife photographer, I love to go on hikes through nature and spot wildlife.

I got the idea of starting a blog after I wrote a summary of the year 2020. As 2020 for had been a hard and difficult year for me, probably for everyone, it felt good to write it all down.
During the writing process, I started to think that perhaps this is something I should do more often, especially since I have plenty of time on my hands. So the idea of blog had arrived. But what should the blog be about? I wanted the blog to have a personal touch, but also be informative. So why not write about my passion, marine life and the marine environment. Try to make it educative, while also writing down accounts of my own marine adventures and encounters with its amazing wildlife!

Currently (2024) I am working for ORCA as an Ocean conservationist. I started working for ORCA in 2022, onboard the DFDS King Seaways in the summer months. Since then I have worked on many different (expedition) cruise companies! Which allowed me to look for whales and dolphins all around the world and engage with guests from all over the world. Whilst working as an Ocean Conservationist I have been lucky enough to visit all 7 Continents and sailed through the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans. I feel very lucky having this dream job and to see many different and amazing wildlife!

I hope you, the readers, will find this blog interesting and learn new things about the marine environment with me and enjoy my photography and travels. I hope to take people with me on my journeys across the world.
